Romo reportedly has new girlfriend

Thought you might like to see Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's new girlfriend, Candice Crawford, a sports reporter on Ch. 33 in Dallas.

Yes ... a former Miss Missouri! Tony, do you REALLY understand how good your life is?

We talked about her today on "Sports Clips" on Mad Rock and wanted to share her with you!

New Cowboys Stadium lives up to hype

Some pics from my recent visit to the new Cowboys Stadium. It was everything I thought it would be -- and more! Thought I would share a few shots with you!

Top photo: The new stadium boasts the largest HD screen in the world. Very cool!
Photo 2: A look at some of the different levels of seats.
Photo 3: As you can see, the outside of the stadium has a lot of glass. Gives it a very different look.

Our official Cowboys season predictions ...

We talked Cowboys football today (Aug. 6th) on "Sports Clips" on Mad Rock ... you know, how we think they'll do this season ... and why ... and gave our predictions on what kind of record the team will have.

---------------
Here's our picks:
JASON TAYLOR: 10-6 ... good enough for a playoff spot ... picks Philadelphia to win NFC East.
SCOTT CALDWELL: 10-6 ... good enough for a playoff spot ... picks NY Giants to win NFC East.
JACKIE VANZANT: 16-0 ... I know ... he's mocking our serious sports discussion!!!! ... picks, of course, the Cowboys to win the NFC East.

Now we can all sit back and see what happens!

Tiger ... Mrs. Brett Favre ... and football

I've been busy and haven't blogged in a while ... sorry about that!

So, here is my feeble attempt to catch up -- some quick, drive-by sports thoughts:
----------------
Tiger wins again (yawn)
Tiger Woods won the Buick Open Sunday -- his 69th tournament victory. Of course, EVERYONE knew he was going to win. He's 36-1 when heading into the final round with a lead. That's right ... 36-1.
Phenomenal. Absolutely unreal.
I personally know a few Tiger haters out there who don't want him to beat Jack's records, but he's only four behind Jack's overall victory total of 73 and only four behind the Golden Bear's unbelievable record of 18 majors.
-----------------
Brett Favre to stay retired?
That drama queen, Brett Favre, allegedly is staying retired. According to reports late last week, he told the Minnesota Vikings "no thanks" ... that he didn't want to go through the grind of another NFL season.
Thank goodness! I think everyone is tired of his act.Jason Taylor, part of our weekly sports roundtable on "Sports Clips" on Mad Rock, said Favre should stay home for another reason -- his great-looking wife!
So, for those wondering, here's a photo of Mrs. Brett Favre (above, left).
-----------------
Football is back!!!!
Some high school teams hit the practice field Monday, Aug. 3rd, and our Dallas Cowboys are already practicing in San Antonio! Yes!!!! All of us on "Sports Clips" are happy about that!!!
This past Friday, one of the things we debated was whether or not the Cowboys should be getting more headlines in early August than the Texas Rangers, who are in a pennant race with the Angels in the AL West.
Our overwhelming answer: YES!!!! Football, like it or not, is still king in Texas. And the Rangers have done very little to change that over the years. VERY little.

Tony, Jessica split? Dallas fans rejoicing!!!

Oh my!!!! Could it be true??!!!? PEOPLE Magazine broke this story on Monday, June 13th.
Cowboys fans everywhere are rejoicing!!!!!

Updated 1:19 p.m. CT, Mon., July 13, 2009
PEOPLE Magazine
-------------------------------------------------------
Tony Romo broke up with Jessica Simpson (pictured below, right) on Thursday, the night before her 29th birthday, a source close to the pop star tells PEOPLE.
"She is heartbroken," says the source. "She loves Tony. But it's been difficult lately. He's busy with his career and she's getting ready to shoot her show ("The Price of
Beauty"). They decided to part ways."
The Dallas Cowboys quarterback fueled breakup rumors when he showed up with about 14 friends at the Hollywood hotspot MyHouse on Friday night without the birthday girl, a source tells PEOPLE.
"He had quite a few girls stop by his dance floor table," says an onlooker. "Romo was sipping Grey Goose and having a fun time with the boys."
Simpson’s rep had no comment. Romo's rep could not be reached for comment.
Simpson had planned to throw a Barbie and Ken-themed party for her birthday, but it fell through, according to a message she wrote on her Twitter page Saturday.
"Barbie party didn't happen, but I turned 29 and feel like I am on top of the world yelling I LOVE GETTING OLDER!" she wrote.
On Saturday night, Romo spoke to a group of well-heeled sports memorabilia collectors at the Sports Museum of Los Angeles. He "blushed" when a woman asked about his relationship with Jessica Simpson, according to the L.A. Daily News.

Sherman makes big hire, names Kinne coach

Friday's (July 10th) "Sports Clips" segment on Mad Rock focused on new Sherman High School Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Gary Kinne (shown here in photo by Chris Jennings of the Herald Democrat).

This is a pretty big hiring for Sherman and we felt Kinne's career was worth reviewing on "Sports Clips."

Kinne comes to Sherman after putting together an impressive playing career at Baylor and successful coaching stints at several schools, including Class 3A Canton, where -- in 2005 -- he was shot by the parent of one of his players. Kinne bounced back from the shooting, returned to coaching later in the fall and led Canton to the playoffs -- the school's first postseason appearance in four decades.

The story made national headlines and Kinne also picked up several national and regional "Coach of the Year" awards.

But, as mentioned, it looks like a good hire for the Bearcats. This guy has won everywhere he's been.

And the Mavs pick ... Rodrigue Beaubois???

The Dallas Mavericks ended up with point guard Rodrigue Beaubois (right) from France in the first round of Thursday night's NBA Draft.
Most of you -- including me -- have never heard of this kid. But the Mavs are really high on him. He supposedly is a mega-athlete with big-time hops (40-inch vertical), long arms and is lightning quick.
Here's what Mavs GM Donnie Nelson thinks of Beaubois:
"I think (cracking the lineup) this year is asking a lot, but you never know. The NBA is kind to athletes, and he's a big-time athlete. He's just starting to scratch the surface."

Lakers, Rangers and Tiger ... oh my!

I'm in the mood for some quick, drive-by sports shorts!
Here we go ...

* Lakers win another NBA title ... Kobe's fourth ... his first without Shaq ... and Coach Phil Jackson's 10th, an NBA record. Still don't like Kobe.

* Rangers are still in first in AL West, but their lead is shrinking. Will they still be in first come Aug. 1st? I say ... no.

* U.S. Open is this week!!!! I love the majors!!!! Can Tiger (shown above) do it again? Will Phil successfully battle the distractions and be competitive? Will the course win, as it often does in the U.S. Open? If you love golf, you gotta love this tournament!!!!

* I'm a NASCAR fan who is just not that excited about NASCAR this year. Can't put my finger on it. Just not into it.

* Saw a brief film clip of Cowboys practicing. Already excited about the '09 season!

* How many of you watched the Penguins beat the Red Wings for the NHL's Stanley Cup? Let's see ... one, two ... that's what I thought.

One more reason I can't stand Kyle Busch

So ... after winning a Nationwide race in Nashville Saturday night, what does the brat, Kyle Busch, do?
He slams the trophy -- a Gibson guitar -- into the ground (Associated Press photo, above) until pieces fly off of it. He said he wanted to shatter the "trophy" so members of his crew could each have a piece.
He later told the man who created the guitar/trophy he didn't mean to offend him, race officials, NASCAR officials or anyone else.
But his "rock star" antics offended me ... and, I'm assuming, a lot of other race fans.
Just one more reason I can't stand Kyle Busch. Is he a really good driver with a lot of talent? Yes. Is he one of the top 5 drivers in the sport? Yes. But I want to vomit every time I see his ugly mug on TV. And I don't think I'm alone.
He's cocky, overly aggressive (especially early in races), doesn't show veteran drivers respect and thinks he is God's gift to NASCAR.
If he starts to dominate NASCAR, the ratings will go in the toilet. I already turn the channel if it looks like he's going to win.
Oh well. His brother probably appreciates him. Fans don't hate Kurt so much anymore.

Goodbye Greg ... Dirk's delicate dilemma ... and Nuggets-Magic finals in the NBA?

Had a few days off but am trying to get back in the swing of things.
While I was out, though, I missed expressing my useless opinion on a few sports topics. So here goes ...
--------------------
Cowboys part ways with Greg Ellis
Good riddance! While I admired Ellis' determination to come back from injury and his versality (moving from defensive end in a 4-3 to outside linebacker in a 3-4), the last three to four seasons have been tainted by his constant bitching about his contract.
Just a few weeks ago, he told a reporter he didn't know if he could truly focus and give his all during the season if he was worried about his contract.
Good grief! Cut his sorry butt.
Besides, the Cowboys really beefed up at linebacker during the recent draft.
--------------------
Dirk's ex-fiance pregnant?
This whole thing is weird. The Mavericks star has cut ties with his ex-felon fiance, but now she says she's pregnant with his child.
Dirk, Dirk, Dirk ... get a good lawyer. And then take a paternity test. Now.
---------------------
Nuggets vs. Magic in NBA Finals?
Wow. The NBA has been hyping a LeBron vs. Kobe finals for a while now ... and it could be the Nuggets vs. the Magic!
The NBA - and ABC - are praying the Cavs can bounce back and the Lakers can out-thug the Nuggets. Because the NBA, more than any other sport, really markets its stars.
Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Carmello and Denver take on Dwight Howard and Orlando, but I'm sure there are a lot of fans who might find that boring. But I'm telling you ... a Denver-Orlando finals would be exciting. Good, physical play with tough defense and big, big shots down the stretch.

Mavs face tough decisions this summer

I know they were just eliminated from the NBA playoffs, but the Dallas Mavericks have some tough decisions to make this summer.
Don't know if we'll address this topic on "Sports Clips" or not, but thought I would go ahead and post my thoughts.
(1.) Jason Kidd is officially a free agent ... a 36-year-old free agent who has clearly seen his better days. He's still a leader, he still can come up with a big game now and then, but the Mavs need to get younger and more athletic at the point guard position. It pains me to say it, but let Kidd walk.
(2.) Eric Dampier (pictured) is just a big body who doesn't move that well and, most of the time, appears lazy on defense. He can't score, he rebounds when he's in the mood and rarely defends the basket. ANYONE would be an upgrade at the post position. ANYONE!!!! Please!!!!
(3.) Is Josh Howard one of the "untouchables" on this team? Will he ever help the Mavs win an NBA title? Or is he a head case that can score 25 and pull down 12 rebounds one night and then disappear the next? He showed a little toughness this season playing on two bad ankles in the Denver series, but you never know what kind of effort you're going to get from him. (Is he still smokin' weed during the season?) He has one more year left on his contract, but I'd love for the Mavs to move him this summer and get a more physical player who is not afraid to mix it up and is a tough defender. This team needs to get tougher! This team needs to play a lot better defense!
I'm all for keeping Dirk as the centerpiece of the franchise ... and keeping Jason Terry as a spark off the bench ... but everyone else is expendable.
O.K. ... there's my "wish list" for the Mavs this summer. Will Cuban have the guts to pull the trigger and make the moves to improve this team? Or will he only make conservative moves and hope this team improves in '09-'10?
Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Mavs, Manny ... and Miss California??!!?

If you heard "Sports Clips" today, you heard Jackie steer the conversation away from sports to Carrie Prejean, who - as Miss California -grabbed headlines recently with her answer about gay marriage during the Miss USA pageant. Someone also found - and published - some nude photos of her in the last few days. What a shock.
For those who don't know who Jackie was talking about, here's a pic.
Both Jackie and Jason were drooling while talking about her.
At least Jackie warned me ... so I was able to pull some audio from a recent interview and use it during our segment. Kind of funny.
Jackie also did a great Manny Ramirez immitation! That caught me totally by surprise! Hope you heard it!
Remember ... "Sports Clips" airs every Friday at 4:50 p.m.

Topics for "Sports Clips" ... Friday, May 8th

Topics for "Sports Clips" segment on Mad Rock ... 4:50 p.m. ... Friday, May 8th.

(1.) Mavericks: Are they dead? Or can they breathe new life into this series?

(2.) Manny being Manny: Out for 50 games and $8 million lighter!!! Dumb*ss!!!

Listen as I try to lead Jason and Jackie down a path of serious sports topics ... and as they rebel like a kid on the first day of kindergarten.

Finally, the role he was born to play!

Have I mentioned how much I dislike Kyle Busch? Couldn't resist posting the above.
Yes, he's a good driver ... yes, he's extremely talented ... but I just can't stand him and it's keeping me from enjoying NASCAR!!!!
Hope you enjoy the above.

What a weird, wild sports weekend!!!

Man, what a weird, wild sports weekend!
We saw a 50-to-1 longshot win the Kentucky Derby, a sure thing (Tiger Woods) falter down the stretch, the Nuggets take Game 1 from the Mavs, a brat who gets on my last nerve drive his way to another NASCAR win, the Celtics finally put away the Bulls in a classic, seven-game playoff series ... and, of course, the tragedy at Valley Ranch that left a scouting assistant paralyzed from the waist down and the Cowboys special teams coach with a couple of broken vertebrae.
Plenty of things to talk about this week ... plus maybe a Mavs' win in a few days?

Grayson County Speedway giving listeners a chance to win free passes to the races!

Was talking this week to Greg Cooper, owner of Grayson County Speedway, and he is giving us a lot of vouchers (passes) to give away on-air so our listeners can watch the cool dirt track racing at GCS!
Jackie and Big Dave will start giving some away next week. Jason, on KMKT, will start giving some away next week, as well.
Greg purchased GCS a few years ago and has made some nice improvements. For families, he's added a non-alcohol seating section.
Thanks, Greg, for hooking our listeners up!

Mavericks, Cowboys will be top topics

This could change but, right now, here's the agenda for the Friday, May 1st edition of "Sports Clips" on Mad Rock ... 4:50 p.m. ...

  • Can the surprising Mavericks knock off the Nuggets in the second round of the NBA playoffs?
  • Even though it happened several days ago, we'll grade the Cowboys' performance in the NFL Draft. (We have to! Jason and I are huge Cowboy fans!!!)

That's probably all we've have time for. Well, that ... and the comedy stylings of Jackie VanZant.

Swine flu threat convinces UIL to postpone all high school sporting events

The governing body over Texas high school athletics (and academic events), the UIL, has announced it is postponing all high school sporting events until May 11th because of the swine flu threat.
This is pretty big! That means no baseball, no softball, no regional track meets, no tennis tournaments ... nothing until at least May 11th. Can't be helped, but this really messes with the state track and field meet.
Don't remember this happening in last 30, 40 years.

Mavs eliminate rival Spurs, 4 games to 1; maybe they're hitting their stride

Dirk getting it done against the Spurs.

Congratulations, Dallas Mavericks !!!
I didn't know how the Mavs would react to a chance to close out their first-round series against the Spurs Tuesday night - especially on the road. Didn't know if they would be tough enough - mentally and physically - to seal the deal.
Now we know. Dallas 106, San Antonio 93.
Of course, the Spurs were without one of their key players, Manu Ginobili. But they're still the Spurs ... a lot of heart ... a lot of experience.
The Mavs now advance to face the winner of the Denver-New Orleans series. After an up-and-down season where they played like apathetic underachievers, maybe the Mavs are hitting their stride and will give their fans something to cheer about for a few more weeks.
Will be interesting to get Jason's views during "Sports Clips" on Friday. I'm sure Jackie will focus on cheerleaders again. :-)

Former UNLV star, Gondrezick, 53, dies following heart transplant

You hardcore college basketball fans old enough to remember those great UNLV Runnin' Rebel teams of the late '70s may recall a hustling 6-6 forward named Glen Gondrezick. He played with Reggie Theus and was coached by the legendary "Tark the Shark."
Anyway, "Gondo" passed away today (Tue, April 28th) at the age of 53 from complications following a heart transplant.
I have fond memories of those old UNLV teams. That's when I first got interested in college hoops.
RIP, Gondo.

Denver 121, New Orleans 63 !!!!

Edwards' horrible crash
Didn't find out until several hours after Sunday's NASCAR race at Talladega that eight people were hurt by flying debris from Carl Edward's horrific crash. Apparently, all eight are O.K.
Did you see the crash? If not, click below:

Unbelievable! Very, very scary moment.
--------------------------------
Can Mavs finish off Spurs?
Can the Mavs close out their first-round series with the Spurs? If I know San Antonio, they'll put up a great fight and make it incredibly tough on the Mavs. Tim Duncan could have a big night. Hopefully so will Dirk.
Game 5 is back in San Antonio ... Tuesday night ... 8:30 p.m. start on TNT.
Go Mavs !!!

Sunday not a bad day for sports fans

Sunday wasn't a bad day for sports fans.
There was some exciting NBA playoff action on the tube, some wicked wrecks and an unexpected winner at Talladega (Brad Keselowski), and you could flip over to ESPN and keep track of Day 2 of the NFL Draft.
The draft is fun for us football geeks. We get to play general manager and either celebrate a great pick by our favorite team ... or yell at the TV - like I did when I saw the Cowboys selected a kicker from USC in the mid rounds. Yeah ... a stinkin' kicker.
I haven't had a chance to study all of the Cowboys' picks, but my knee-jerk reaction is that it was a very average draft by Jerry, Wade and the rest of the "War Room." Hopefully they'll prove me wrong.
I imagine we'll talk about it this Friday on "Sports Clips."
Here are the Dallas Cowboys picks in the 2009 NFL Draft.
